HYDERABAD: Like a child raiding the refrigerator in the night, the government continues to nibble away at the city's green cover. After having given 17 acres of the deer haven of Chilkur forest to the Outer Ring Road (ORR), the state has now decided to part with a further 60 acres of forest land, this time to the Andhra Pradesh Police Academy (APPA).This is the result of a neat sleight of hand by the policemen.
After a show of reluctance, the academy had parted with 27 acres of its land to the Hyderabad Urban Development Authority (Huda), which is building the Outer Ring Road (ORR), and wrested a promise that it would be compensated suitably.
Once the APPA land was given and taken, the policemen started airing the proposal that they needed to expand their campus and would need more than the 27 acres they had lost to the road. This chunk they want from the Chilkur reserve. The Huda authorities, who had only promised APPA compensation within the vicinity, but not necessarily forest land, are flummoxed. Though the forest department initially resisted APPA's demand, it had to give in after home minister K Jana Reddy threw his weight behind the policemen. So where APPA lost 27 acres to ORR, it is now likely to get 60 acres carved from the Chilkur reserve. To make up for its loss, the forest department would be given 120 acres in Nalgonda district. For the twin cities, however, there's going to be no such compensation. The APPA authorities see no environmental depredation in their action. It's only a reserve forest they are cutting into, not a real forest, they say. No greenery or animals would be lost. "Anyway, isn't the government providing double the land to the forest department," asked a senior academy officer. Principal conservator of forests S K Das could not be contacted for his comments.
